Dashboard data processing updates related to flagging

We've made some updates to the way that data files are processed and flags are displayed.

  • The 'Boundary points with a deviation above twice the average' flag was usually not flagging points which met the criteria for being flagged. This has been corrected and you may now see more flagged data points at the beginning and/or end of the data file if you process your data with this option turned on. We are still evaluating this particular flag to determine if additional tuning needs to be made to make this as useful as possible. If you feel it is excluding valuable data points, feel free to not use it. It is not on by default.
  • We have also clarified the add/edit data file interface to not show the option to hide flags from the postprocessed dataset if there was no flagging options set.
  • In addition, if there is no data smoothing going on and if the flags are not hidden from the postprocessed dataset, the resulting chart does not show a postprocessed data series, since it would be identical to the original data series.

We have opted not to automatically reprocess your data and give you the option to do so. Data files which have been processed with the old methods will show a notice at the top of the page.

microAethCOM v2.1.1.0 released

AethLabs has released a new version of the microAethCOM PC software to better support Windows 8.

microAethCOM v2.1.1.0 has the following changes:

  • Improved support for Windows 8.0
  • Bug fixes for USB communications in Windows 8
  • Updated USB driver for use in Windows 8

AE51 FlowCal v2.1.2.0 is included and has been released to improve support for performing flow calibration on Windows 8.

These new versions of the software are both compatible with firmware PS706.

These releases build on the previous release of microAethCOM (v2.1.0.1) and firmware PS706 announced in November.

microAethCOM v2.1.0.1 included the following improvements:

  • Support for microAeth Model AE51 firmware PS706. AethLabs recommends updating your instrument firmware to PS706 for new features and improved performance.
  • Data files can now be downloaded in either .DAT or .CSV filetypes to a disk location of the user's choosing.
  • Instrument status codes are now displayed in bottom left hand corner of the main screen in human readable text if detected.
  • Improved USB communications when used in conjunction with firmware PS706. Instrument startup and shutdown are detected in the microAethCOM console when used with firmware PS706.
  • User interface has been simplified with instrument information shown on main page along with real-time graph.
  • Data log is automatically deleted when an instrument is disconnected.
  • Auto startup and shutdown options are no longer included in the microAethCOM application.

You must first either log in to or sign up for a free account at the AethLabs website to download the software. Once you are logged in, you can get more information and download the release here.

microAethCOM v2.1.0.1 and firmware PS706 released

We've released a new version of the microAethCOM PC software (v2.1.0.1) and device firmware (PS706) which will provide several new options and improvements related to the operation microAeth AE51.

This software update to microAethCOM v2.1.0.1 is recommended for microAeth AE51 devices running the included firmware PS706 or the older firmware PS605. While we recommend updating the firmware on all AE51 devices to PS706, you can still maintain PS605 firmware on older devices, if you would like.

Improvements in microAethCOM v2.1.0.1

  • Support for microAeth Model AE51 firmware PS706 (see improvements in PS706 below).

Improvements in firmware version PS706

  • Simple shutdown mode. Hold the power button for three seconds to shut the instrument down. Secure shutdown mode is the timed sequence shutdown that uses multiple button presses to 'encode' the shutdown process. USB only mode can be used to lock the instrument from being shutdown.
  • Improved USB communications in conjunction with PC software v2.1.0.1.
  • Added 10s and 30s timebases.
  • Improved measurement stability and sensitivity and flow control stability.
  • Reintroduced the 200 ml/min flow rate setting
  • Fixed flash full bug that causes instrument to not startup when memory is full.
  • Improved flow calibration. Better measurement stability during the flow calibration process especially for the 25 ml/min datapoint. (Requires updated flow calibration software included with this install package.)
  • Firmware PS706 can be installed on the AE51 once the microAethCOM v2.1 application is installed - just go to the 'Options' menu and select Upgrade Firmware. If you have an older microAeth AE51 that was manufactured by Magee Scientific with a serial number below 200, please contact AethLabs before attempting the upgrade process.

You must first either log in to or sign up for a free account at the AethLabs website to download the software. Once you are logged in, you can get more information and download the release here.

AethLabs will be in Portland next week for AAAR 2013. If you are there too, please come by our booth (#109) if you'd like to talk, have any questions, or just want to catch up.

Minor updates to dataset processing algorithms

The data processing algorithms have been updated to correct a couple of relatively minor errors related to the data visualizations and post-processed data files.

  • The raw dataset was errantly shown with the first charted point having a value of 0.
  • If the dataset has any smoothing algorithms applied to it, both the post-processed data visualizations and the post-processed data file available for download likely had incorrect values for the first and last points in the dataset.
  • Datasets which had been smoothed using the ONA method had incorrect values for the first window of smoothing and the method of calculating the smoothing windows have been updated which has shifted those windows and therefore most of the post-processed black carbon values.

We have opted not to automatically reprocess your data and give you the option to do so. Data files which have been processed with the old methods will show a notice at the top of the page.
